Our son has become very smart and manipulative at baseball games. When his brother has a baseball game, we always pack Dominic a snack bag. This typically will be his lunch or dinner since the games are usually around those times. He is very routine on this and he enjoys watching his brother play as long as he has his snack bag first.
Around the second or third inning the snack bag has been finished for a long time. He will look over at his grandpa and say, “Pepaw, I have to go potty.” We all know that he probably does have to go potty a bit but he really knows he will be able to talk his grandfather into buying him Lays potato chips aka “yellow chips.” This has occurred so many times that the lady at the snack bar has actually put a bag a side and not sold it because she knows he will be coming for them and doesn’t want to be sold out.
It is funny how “yellow chips” can be a routine and a tradition at a ball game. It is also a connection where Dominic and his grandfather can have their own special thing. It is an “inside joke” where Dominic thinks he has pulled one over on his grandfather again but it never fails they always return with the “yellow chips.”
No matter what, Dominic is able to negotiate his wants with his grandfather and has even made the snack bar lady make sure he is set. He thinks he is being sneaky but we are fully aware of what he is doing. This is one of those times that we laugh, enjoy the moment, and celebrate the “yellow chips.”
